- The High Altitude Student Platform (HASP) provides space on a stratospheric balloon payload for student-run experiments. Our team is following up on our successful pilot test of three infrasound microphones at 37 kilometers above sea level during the 2014 HASP flight. The 2015 experiment will involve more microphones, a larger network aperture, and sensors to measure acceleration, temperature, and wind speed throughout the flight. Our goals include quantifying the source and direction of infrasound in the stratosphere, determining the masking effect of lower atmospheric layers on acoustic radiation, examining the gravity wave spectrum trhought the flight, and resolving the spatial extent of infrasound in the stratosphere originating from stationary acoustic sources at the Earth's surface.
